ADHD Coaching for Graduate Students and Faculty

At The Dissertation Coach, we understand that many graduate students struggle not because they lack ability, but because ADHD makes the dissertation process uniquely challenging. Our ADHD coaching services are designed to support students who experience difficulties with focus, time management, motivation, emotional regulation, and follow-through.

Our ADHD coaches specialize in helping graduate students build systems that actually work for ADHD brains. Through personalized, strengths-based coaching, we help clients reduce overwhelm, increase consistency, and make real progress, without shame, burnout, or unrealistic expectations.

Unlike therapy or academic advising, ADHD coaching focuses on practical skills, sustainable strategies, and day-to-day execution. We help you figure out how you work best and build structures that support you through the demands of graduate school and dissertation writing.

What is ADHD Coaching?

ADHD coaching is a collaborative, goal-oriented partnership that helps individuals with ADHD improve executive functioning, self-management, and follow-through. Coaching focuses on practical strategies for managing work, time, energy, and emotions, especially in high-demand environments such as graduate school.

Through regular coaching sessions and ongoing support, your ADHD coach helps you:

  • Create systems for planning, prioritizing, and follow-through
  • Break large, overwhelming tasks into clear, manageable steps
  • Develop realistic routines that support focus and energy
  • Reduce procrastination, avoidance, and last-minute stress
  • Manage emotional overwhelm, self-criticism, and burnout
  • Build accountability structures that actually work for ADHD
  • Increase consistency without relying on willpower alone

ADHD coaching helps you work with your brain instead of constantly fighting it.

Note: ADHD coaching is not therapy and does not diagnose or treat mental health conditions.

Who We Help

Our ADHD coaching services are designed specifically for graduate students and academics, including master’s and doctoral students across disciplines. Coaching is especially helpful if you:

  • Have a formal ADHD diagnosis (or strongly suspect ADHD)
  • Struggle with procrastination, time blindness, or overwhelm
  • Feel capable but inconsistent
  • Rely on last-minute pressure to get work done
  • Burn out repeatedly despite strong intentions
  • Have difficulty sustaining routines or momentum
  • Feel ashamed or frustrated by how hard things feel

You do not need to be “failing” to benefit from ADHD coaching. Many of our clients are high-achieving students who want more sustainable, humane ways of working.

When to Consider ADHD Coaching

ADHD coaching may be right for you if you’ve thought:

  • I know what to do, but I can’t seem to do it.
  • I work in bursts and then crash.
  • Traditional productivity advice doesn’t work for me.
  • I feel constantly behind, no matter how hard I try.
  • I need accountability that doesn’t shame me.
  • I want systems that work with my brain, not against it.

If these resonate, ADHD coaching can help you create clarity, consistency, and momentum.

    Frequently Asked Questions

    L

Can I use my FSA or HSA for ADHD coaching?

Yes! If you have a Flexible Spending Account (FSA) or Health Savings Account (HSA), you may be able to use those funds to pay for ADHD coaching at The Dissertation Coach.

To be eligible, your ADHD coaching sessions need to be connected to a medical diagnosis. Here is what you will need:

A confirmed ADHD diagnosis. When you enroll in coaching, we will ask for your ICD-10 diagnosis code (typically F90.0, F90.1, or F90.2). Your diagnosing provider can give you this code.

A Letter of Medical Necessity (LMN). Some FSA/HSA administrators require a letter from your doctor or licensed healthcare provider confirming that ADHD coaching is part of your treatment plan. We recommend requesting this from your provider before your first session.

A receipt from us. We provide itemized receipts that include your diagnosis code and service description. You can submit this receipt directly to your FSA or HSA administrator for reimbursement.

Coverage policies vary by plan, so we always recommend checking with your FSA or HSA administrator to confirm your specific benefits before getting started.
