FREE Webinar – Choosing Your Research Vehicle: Aligning Methodology with Purpose and Personality

Choosing Your Research Vehicle: Aligning Methodology with Purpose and Personality
🗓️ Wednesday, June 25, 2025
⏱️ 12:00 – 1:00 p.m. Eastern (New York Time)
Taught by: Kendra Rickerby, Ph.D.
Whether you are designing your first qualitative study or reevaluating your current research design, this session will offer valuable insights to ensure methodological coherence and personal alignment throughout the dissertation research process. Similar to the vehicle you choose to use for your commute to work, your choice of research methodology is a window into what you value and how you go about getting things done. Be it a bicycle, public transportation, a hybrid sedan, a SUV, or a truck, the chosen vessel, like the researcher’s methodology, is an important and intentional decision to make.
What You’ll Learn:
This webinar is designed to help researchers align their study’s purpose with a methodology that not only fits their research questions but also complements their unique personality and strengthens their practitioner lenses. Often, Doctoral candidates find themselves wrestling with the tension between the academic demands of rigorous inquiry and the approach that feels most intuitive to them.
This session will explore strategies to bridge that gap by examining how the researcher’s identity, philosophical orientation, and desired significance of study, shape the methodological choices they make—ultimately influencing the integrity and authenticity of their work. A central feature of this interactive webinar will be an in-depth discussion of Tables 4.1 and 4.2 from Qualitative Inquiry and Research Design: Choosing Among Five Approaches 4th edition, by Creswell and Poth (2018).
The webinar will contrast data procedures across five core qualitative approaches: narrative research, phenomenology, grounded theory, ethnography, and case study. Participants will learn how to use this table as a reflective tool to assess alignment between their study’s intent and their methodological instincts.
